Subscension Theatre is thrilled to be producing Tony Kushners translation of Bertolt Brechts Mother Courage and Her Children. In 1939, Bertolt Brecht sat and wrote Mother Courage in what one scholar referred to as a white heat. Brecht was angry. Adolf Hitler has just invaded Poland and the world seemed complacent to let the wheels of war turn. Brecht aimed to show the world that a being who supports the war by ignoring its violence will surely become a victim to it. 70 years later Tony Kushner breathed new life into this timeless piece. His language is harsh, loud, evocative and full of dark humor. This year, Subscension Theatre is bringing the story of Courage back to Philadelphia. Our production features a cast of players who identify as female and non-binary. We are excited to discover what happens when the perpetrators & 17.
