Sebastian Barry explores the experience of his great-grandfather, Thomas Dunne, the last Catholic chief of the Dublin Metropolitan Police in the years before Irish Independence in 1922.Known as a "castle Catholic," Dunne is not a comfortable ancestor and Barry reveals Dunne's story with compassion and honesty. Now trapped in a small room in a mental institution, Dunne is left with his memories. Evocative of Lear, Dunne struggles to come to terms with his history and himself.
